Male Hair Loss

About 50-60 % of all men suffer of hair loss. Main cause of hair loss in men is usually the so-called androgenetic alopecia , which means genetic hair loss. In these cases it is not a hair loss due to illness but it is a genetic factor when the hair loss starts and how fast it proceeds. Everybody loses up to 100 hair daily. This usually is not recognized because after a phase of recovery of the hair follicle new hair grows back again. Important is to evaluate the reason for hair loss. Sometimes a hormonal imbalance or a disequilibrium of vitamins and micronutrients can cause hair loss. Even bacterial infections and mycotic infections can lead to hair loss and should be excluded. Even a very stressful life and some medication can cause hair loss. The therapy would be of course a different one.
The hair loss of men is evaluated with the so-called Hamilton scale. It is important to know that hair which is resistant to hormonal changes is situated at the back of your head and above your ears. This is the reason why hair restoration surgeons take grafts from the back of your head.

Hamilton-Norwood Scale

Thumb
To evaluate the severity of the hair loss we use the so-called Hamilton-Norwood Scale, which helps us to classify the actual stadium of hair loss. It is an important tool to plan and operate a hair transplantation. With the classification into different stadiums we can evaluate the follicular units which have to be transplanted.

Stage: recommendation for number of grafts per transplantation

Stage I-III: ca. 1000-1500 Grafts
Stage IV: ca. 2000 Grafts
Stage V-VII: ca. 4000-5000 Grafts
