Causes

DHT, the hormone behind the hair loss

Androgenetic alopecia is the cause in over 95% of cases. Follicles miniaturise step by step until they no longer produce visible hair.

D

DHT sensitivity

Genetically predisposed follicles react to dihydrotestosterone and shrink over time. Receding temples, a thinning crown, a bald front, the pattern is characteristic and is graded on the Hamilton-Norwood scale.

A

Ageing

The hair cycle naturally slows with age. The anagen (growth) phase shortens and hair becomes thinner and finer, even without a genetic predisposition.

S

Stress & lifestyle

Chronic stress can trigger telogen effluvium, diffuse shedding that sets in two to four months later. Sleep, diet and exercise all measurably affect the hair cycle.

M

Medication & illness

Thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions and certain medications can trigger or worsen hair loss. A proper differential diagnosis is essential.

Frequently asked

What patients want to know

What is androgenetic alopecia?+
The most common form of hair loss in men. Genetically predisposed follicles are oversensitive to DHT and miniaturise step by step, until they no longer produce visible hair.
At what age does male hair loss start?+
On average it first appears at 24. Thirty per cent of men show visible hair loss before 30. How it progresses is individual, some stabilise, others advance quickly.
Can hair loss be treated without surgery?+
Yes. PRP, mesotherapy and Regenera Activa can slow the loss and strengthen the hair you still have. Once loss is advanced, a transplant is the only method that permanently brings hair back.
How many grafts will I need?+
Receding temples: 1,500-2,500. A bald front with crown loss: 4,000+. The exact number depends on your findings and the density you want, and is agreed during your consultation.
Does Dr. Rosenthal perform the procedure personally?+
Yes. Consultation, planning, surgery, aftercare: all of it personally. No procedure is delegated to assistants. That is what separates us from clinics working at volume.
