How it works

Natural stimulation of the scalp using your own growth factors

Thinning hair, increased shedding or declining hair quality weigh heavily on many people. PRP therapy addresses this with a non-surgical approach that uses your own blood.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma: a highly concentrated plasma obtained from your own blood and rich in growth factors. These growth factors play a central role in the body’s regeneration and repair processes.

The aim is to improve the biological conditions in the scalp, encourage microcirculation and stimulate weakened but still active follicles. Because only your own material is used, there is no risk of rejection or of an allergic reaction to the substance itself.

On the evidence, we are candid: most of the available studies show a positive trend in hair density and hair diameter, particularly in early stages and in patients under forty. However, placebo-controlled studies showing no measurable effect also exist. No single international protocol for platelet concentration, injection volume and intervals has become established. We think it is right to say that before treatment rather than after.

An important distinction: PRP therapy does not replace a hair transplant. Where follicles have already permanently regressed or been destroyed, PRP cannot create new ones. In early to moderate stages it can help stabilise the loss and improve hair quality.

Indication

Who is the treatment suitable for?

Success depends on there still being viable follicles in the areas to be treated, ones that can respond to stimulation.

Makes sense for
  • early to moderate hair loss
  • diffuse thinning of the hair
  • stress-related or hormonally driven hair loss
  • preparing the hair for a transplant
  • support after a transplant, for long-term stabilisation
  • a preference for a natural, non-invasive approach
Not suitable for
  • follicles that have fully regressed or been destroyed
  • active inflammation or infection of the scalp
  • untreated underlying dermatological conditions
  • certain blood or clotting disorders
  • untreated underlying conditions driving the hair loss

In these situations, treating the cause comes first, or we recommend an alternative approach. That decision follows a medical examination, not a wish list.

Procedure

Outpatient, in clearly structured steps

  1. History and hair analysisWe discuss the progression, the pattern and possible triggers. Where needed we check contributing factors such as iron deficiency or thyroid values.
  2. Blood drawA small amount of venous blood is taken, the same as a routine blood test.
  3. Processing the bloodThe blood is processed in a dedicated centrifuge. The solid components are separated from the plasma, yielding platelet-rich plasma with a high concentration of growth factors.
  4. Injection into the scalpThe prepared PRP is injected into the affected areas with fine needles, to trigger regenerative processes, encourage blood flow and improve the environment around the follicles.
  5. Follow-up reviewA check-up, with the treatment plan adjusted according to how things have actually progressed.

The whole treatment, including processing, usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. No special preparation is needed on your part.

PRP does not work immediately, but through repeated stimulation. In most cases we recommend a course of several sessions at set intervals, followed by top-ups. Your individual plan is drawn up after the medical examination.

Results

What you can realistically expect

Downtime

None. Brief redness or tenderness is possible.

First signs

After a few weeks, less shedding, or improved texture.

Reliable assessment

Over several months, in line with the natural hair cycle.

Tolerability

Very good, since only your own material is used.

We recommend avoiding sport, saunas and intense physical exertion for about 48 hours, and washing your hair for about 12 hours.

Hair growth follows a natural cycle, so patience is an essential part of this therapy. The main goals are stabilising the loss and improving hair quality. Individual results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Possible side effects include temporary redness, small bruises, swelling or a feeling of tightness at the injection sites. Serious complications are rare when the treatment is performed properly.

Combinations

Within the wider plan

PRP is often used not on its own but as one component of a wider plan. Sensible combinations include mesotherapy for targeted nutrient delivery, polynucleotides to improve scalp quality, and medical topical treatments.

Before and after a hair transplant, PRP can be used to prepare the recipient area and stabilise the hair you already have. Which combination makes sense in your case is something we decide together after the hair analysis.

Frequently asked

PRP therapy: your questions

How long does the effect last?

The effect is not permanent, because PRP does not change the underlying predisposition. Once the initial course is complete we usually recommend top-ups every three to six months to hold the result. How long it lasts in any individual case depends on the type of hair loss, on age, and on whether other causes are being treated in parallel.

When are the first results visible, and when does hair grow?

First changes, noticeably less shedding, or better hair texture, are often felt after a few weeks. Visible growth follows the natural hair cycle and takes considerably longer. A reliable assessment is usually only possible after three to six months, which is why we do not draw interim conclusions before then.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe the injections as well tolerated, comparable to brief pinpricks. Local anaesthetic is available on request. Drawing the blood is the same as a routine blood test.

When can I wash my hair afterwards?

Usually after about twelve hours. Use a mild shampoo and avoid vigorous rubbing and very hot water, so the scalp is not irritated unnecessarily.

How long should I avoid exercise after PRP?

We recommend a break of about 48 hours from sport, saunas and intense physical exertion. Heavy sweating and increased blood flow can irritate the scalp further during this phase.

How many sessions are needed?

That depends on the findings. The usual approach is an initial course of several sessions at set intervals, followed by top-ups. We only set the specific plan after the medical examination, because a blanket session count does not do justice to an individual case.

Consultation

Start by establishing the findings

Whether PRP makes sense for you is what the hair analysis shows. Dr. Rosenthal conducts every consultation personally.
